    Yes, Some models have a short peak capability slightly higher than their continuous output ratting.

      not all A models can.

      But an interesting aspect is that they are rated on output AMPS. Thus when the grid Voltage is a bit high, almost all inverters can output a bit more watts.

          Yeah I've noticed mine maxing out at 11.4kW on a few occasions, but it was before I signed up on pvoutput so it was never captured. I was kind of surprise that my 12.21kW system is capable of maxing out the 11.4kW inverter, since I have 3 arrays facing different directions.

          • Caught my first power outage the other day, luckily a short one. Good to know the inverter is being tested to all the production variables early on.

            • I almost pulled the trigger on a single Tesla Powerwall.... so it could cover small outages and still run solar during those times. They recommend two of them.... but one should last an entire day.

                Yeah I explored this option with Tesla when I got their solar quote, but because their overall poor communication and sales process I just put it on the back burner for now.

                It COULD always be added later I'm sure, maybe a little more complicated connection, but hopefully the pricing might come down as well in coming years. Right now you're looking at about $7k per Powerwall before incentives and while that not far off a whole house generator install it makes more sense in states where you could also use that Powerwall for off-peak charging...no such incentive here in NJ, or at least with JCP&L.

                • One of the recent energy sage email blasts had an interesting article about a few utilities in New England running battery storage pilots, where they subsidize the cost in exchange for limited load management rights.

                  The idea of battery storage with islanding capabilities is really appealing, but the quoted two powerwalls would have more than doubled the cost of our system, and was more than three times the installed cost of a whole home gas generator. If PSE&G decides to get in on the act, I'd certainly be interested.

                    • shet Hey, just noticed your post on the other GPE thread and figured I would tag you here on mine in case you haven't seen my journey.

                          Think about what they are saying. I use over 40kWh a day and I would expect those powerwalls are not rated 20kWh each so 7 days worth of power would be an overestimation

                            It's stated right there in the screenshot, "estimated at 30 kWh per day", so for you about 5-days.

                            But don't you think you would have some solar generation during that time to recharge them?

                              Your grid is down because a storm came through. That could mean lawn chairs on your solar array, heavy clouds, or zombies.

                              • I can't speak for anyone else, but out in my quasi-rural area, we experience half a dozen to a dozen minor outages (<1 hour) in a given year and have had one major, multi-day outage after an ice storm two winters ago. While the picture of uninterrupted comfort is nice, given what it costs to actually operate a whole home generator, do people really maintain normal consumption patterns while islanded?

                                Seems like a reasonably sized battery + solar could keep the well and septic pumps running and a minimum amount of lights and miscellany going for a good while even with cloudy skies. Of course, you could buy a lot of nights in a decent hotel for the cost of two power walls, also.
