Square D 2 circuit box.JPG I've pretty much given my suggestions in circuit protection in my last post Take Mike 90250's suggestion for load fusing on the battery if you can get it. if not get whatever appropriate size fusing you can find and keep it at or near the battery. Here's a bad picture of a breaker box for PV to CC and CC to battery .

4 of your panels in series is 144, which is too close to the kill voltage of 150V.. 2 panels in series is all you need.Powerfab top of pole PV mount (2) | Listeroid 6/1 w/st5 gen head | XW6048 inverter/chgr | Iota 48V/15A charger | Morningstar 60A MPPT | 48V, 800A NiFe Battery (in series)| 15, Evergreen 205w "12V" PV array on pole | Midnight ePanel | Grundfos 10 SO5-9 with 3 wire Franklin Electric motor (1/2hp 240V 1ph ) on a timer for 3 hr noontime run - Runs off PV ||

I was under the assumption four 12v panels in series was 48v.
Have I been wrong all this time??
And if so should I have them in 2 in series and 2 in parallel??Comment

Just got this off the web
When wiring solar panels in a series, the voltage is additive, but the amperage remains the same. eg. If you had 4 solar panels in a series and each was rated at 12 volts and 5 amps, the entire array would be 48 volts and 5 amps.Oct 29, 2014 How to Wire Solar Panels in Parallel or Series | HES PV Blog

You're overthinking this. A 12 volt nominal panel can have up to 22.5 volts open circuit ( no load connected ) and 18.5 volts maximum power, (load connected, current flowing ) .4, 12 volt panels in series is considered 48 volts nominal.
Here is a chart showing Soc voltages. These are for a battery, at rest, with no load or charging. Typical float charging on a 12 volt battery would be 13.8 volts. Typical charging voltage to consider a 12 volt battery full is 14.8. A 12 volt battery , if sitting at 12 volts is considered discharged to 50% Soc. you never want to get below this point if you want your batteries to last. Charging a 12 volt battery requires higher voltage to push the current into the battery, up to and beyond 15 volts for equalization. These numbers are for flooded lead acid batteries. Gel, AGM and other technologies have different numbers.

Thanks LH. I will print that chart off and hang it next to my set up.
May I also ask this. A dc circuit breaker rated at 125v is good for any voltage up to that figure. So when you say I need a 15a breaker a 125v 15a one will suffice.?Comment

Wow!! That's absolutely gorgeous. Any nasty critters in the ocean or on land to deal with?2.2kw Suntech mono, Classic 200, NEW Trace SW4024Comment

Yes You're all good Again, if you can find out if switch rated would help. If not I wouldn't switch them on and off during the day. The arcing could weld them open or closed. They are basically resettable fuses if not switch rated.2.2kw Suntech mono, Classic 200, NEW Trace SW4024Comment

Ocean is perfect. We have Zanzibar 40kms due west of us but not a lot of fish. Two beautiful reefs out front covered with oysters. We get elephant walking behind the house most nights and recently had lion on the beach. Plenty of other game also. Every day a troupe of 50 baboons pass by on the beach to hunt crabs. Yeah. Nice spot.Comment

Sounds idyllic. Beats sitting in traffic to go sit in an office cubicle 40 hr's. a week.2.2kw Suntech mono, Classic 200, NEW Trace SW4024Comment
