What does this mean?

I contacted Coned to try to change my solar anniversary date and they sent me this in return. Does it mean my solar credits never expire and just keep accruing endlessly?


In response to your email, we apologize for any confusion. The Net Meter Summary on your bill shows the running summary of the net meter credits in your kilowatt hour bank. Any usage exported to the Con Edison grid is calculated and applied to usage imported from our grid during months where the solar panels do not cover the total amount of energy used within the bill cycle. Unfortunately, there is no longer an annual payout for new solar customers. The rule was changed on March 9, 2017. This means that any customer that had solar installed after this date is not eligible for an annual payout. The overproduction you have once the year is over, will continue to carry over and will not expire.

Sounds like you will no longer be paid for over production. Power companies in my area only payout over consumption once a year and they pay you the wholesale price of fuel only not the rate you are charged per KWh.

Yeah I get that. But I don’t mind because they pay such low rates anyway. The question is do they reset my credits to zero once a year. Looks like they don’t which world be great.

According to the notification above it looks like your balance carried forward from year to year. How much surplus are you generating?

Might be time for a new EV or something that consumes electricity like a hot-tub. It is the reverse of a conservation mentality

Looks like with a warmer winter and a lot of cloudless skys, I may hit
the April reset with 4000 or 5000 KWh surplus. PoCo will keep that for
free, which does not bother me. There was no extra cost to generate it.
They are continuing to be my free, infinite capacity, 100% efficient, zero
maintenance battery.

In the mean time I am notified the Nyle e8 air-source heat pump will
be available this spring, with it I hope to use some of that surplus for
heating water in the future. Bruce Roe

I think the answer to your statement lies in the last sentence of the ConEd statement.

If you're still in doubt, either call them back and get the name of the person who answers your question or call the PUC in your state and ask them. Folks here cannot give you a definitive answer on questions of policy.

I’ve been making everything electric driven- I used to have $10k of energy bills split between oil and the utility. This year it will be maybe $250 in total

I would much rather keep rolling the credits over and over like that. Hard to believe they would make that offer. My utility zeros out the account and pays me wholesale at the end of April each year, just when I could used the banked energy the most, entering the summer A/C season.

In Indiana where we have net metering through 2031, the credits just keep rolling forward with no expiration date.. until you move.

The Nyle system will do a very good job of using up some of that surplus.

Have you looked into ETS systems? These room systems will make any nook in your home a very cozy place.........

Store those extra kWh as heat in thermal ceramic bricks. Release the heat at your command. Might as well make your self comfortable rather than giving up those kWh.

I do not see an advantage using that here. In this very low indoor winter
humidity, l already keep the temp a dozen degrees higher than the green

NH allows me to roll my credit. They offer the option to sell once a year for very low rate. About the only reason it makes sense is if the owner is selling the house as the credit stays with the house.
