The Ironridge instructions call for sealant in the hole. To me, that sounds unnecessary, because the lag and the wood will form a very tight connection. Ironridge doesn't show sealant around the bottom of the flashing, but that's what everyone I know does, too. As Mike said, a half-circle around the bolt center. The theory is that this will divert water downstream. It doesn't prevent water from getting upstream, but makes it much less likely. It's all about getting the odds in your favor. Things do go wrong. The more things you have as backup without screwing up the system, the better.

Update on the flashing and sealant - i installed with sealant in the hole, as well as a glob on top. We've gotten a couple of monsoon level downpours this week and NO LEAKS! yay.Comment
