Microinverter Surge Protection

I'm looking to get ideas from people regarding surge protection for a 30 panel install with Enphase M215's

I'd like to know what you installed (or have seen installed) and where it was installed. I've only found a couple of installs that mention SPDs and in both cases they used Citel's product within the Soladeck box on the roof. Installing within the attic (16" from the Soladeck) or by the main panel would be easier for access, by obviously less than ideal being further from the panels/inverters.

I'm also curious if people just aren't installing these as they don't seem to be mentioned much in install write ups or offered by online stores.

With both the panels and inverters (electronics) up on the roof, lightning protection is nearly impossible. You can install a couple SPD's at the main power meter, anything more requires a tall tower on either side of your house, with a ground cable between them.

Play the numbers. Stats and chances are 95% of all electrical abnormalities come via your power line in the Differential Mode of operation. The best location for a TVSS is installed right at the Meter Can installed by your POCO. Otherwise look for units that have at least:

(a) UL 1449 Second Edition listed.
(b) SVR of 400V or less.
(c) Rated for 70,000A per phase..
(d) Have indicator lights and/or audible alarm indicating the device is functional.

In addition, some utilities will install an SPD right on the transformer can. If you are really concerned about lightning induced voltage spikes, might be worth a call to the POCO to inquire.
