Need ideas on how to keep a 24V batery bank warm in the winter (6V x 4 bat)

    You are asking good questions. You won't need to disconnect FLA's to add water as long as you design access to them. Look at an FLA battery - and you can visually see all it takes is removing the cap. Note there are watering systems - which I don't see people talking about. I don't know how many use them.

    I confronted the same issue you are - winter storage. My first thought was to locate the batteries in an unheated building below grade - which I discarded after making posts on this site as too difficult and not worth the effort (like a bunker). I decided that IF I used FLA, I would have the panels on the unheated building and run the output underground to the house, with the batteries in the basement of the house, AND include a venting system with fresh air inlet and an outlet. I was never thrilled about having FLA in my basement (safety), and other factors (charge characteristics) led me to choose a different battery chemistry. But that is where I would have put them for the best year round performance. Your mileage may vary.
