Bye bye Evergreen

To think that at one point in time their stock was over $100 a share. They certainly won't be the last manufacturer to come crashing down.

You could see this one coming 3 years ago. Many more US manufactures to follow.

What really stinks if the state of Massachusetts gave then millions to bail them out. What did they do with the money? They closed US manufacturing, laid off the employees, and moved it to China.

If you read ESLR is not completely out of business. They will wipe out their debt here and will remain operating as a China company. So way to go MIT and the state of Massachusetts, the US and State tax payers say THANK YOU for sending our money and jobs to China.

It's always sad to see US manufacturing fall off. With cost pressures increasing daily from China based manufacturing firms, it is extremely difficult to stay competitive, however I truly believe that the firms providing quality products and services will be able to outlast the international pricing wars. I do agree with you Sunking that this is more than likely just the start of the US/Euro firms struggle.

Evergreen failed because their execution suck... All markets are dynamic so in order to be successful you need to embrace change and evolve your business. It is very sad to see Evergreen go because their modules were quite good but even if you have a great product, you need to execute and understand your costumers... perfect example is apple back in the day... great tech but poor execution..

hopefully there is a steve jobs bouncing around in evergreen somewhere...

i think steve jobs is the modern Ford, edison etc.... a lot of respect for the man.. hardest thing to do is innovate imo

The first PCs I had were Apple - starting in 1982. Eventually I got tired of being the odd man out where everything else was IBM type so I quit.

Now I refuse to own or use anything to do with Apple. I really don't like Job's attitude, business practices or ethics.

I am sure he is very concerned over my personal opinion!

hahaha.... nothing wrong with old school technology!!! I so regret throwing out my dos operated computer argh! nothing beats 5 1/2 floppy

I don't know steve jobs, i just respect what he did with old school apple and new school apple. He probably not the coolest person to hang out with but he for sure is a innovator.

That's a damn shame. Evergreen was the only solar company I know of to reach out to the consumer/DIY market directly through resellers on eBay.. Think of how many people (like me) built their own DIY solar panels based on Evergreen's cells. My hat is off to them for at least trying to be innovative when it came to marketing solar products. Damn shame.

Keith the only reason they sold to consumers was a last futile attempt to stay in biz by giving their stuff away. They ripped off US tax payers with Obama's help to the tune of $1 Billion in total. They deserve to be in jail. They are now being set up in China debt free.

I can't really blame Obama for the business failing. It's not like he was running the day to day business operations.

The failure for the company boils down to poor business execution and that is on Solyndra's management. Like all initial investment there will be risk. There is no such thing as a risk free investment.

Chris I concur... Evergreen was definitely innovative but they only started selling their products more effectively as the business began to tank... Most people saw through that and avoided their products. It also didn't help that their devs were all down on Evergreen management for crap tons of missteps...

I can't really blame Obama for the business failing.

I don't either really, I blame the system of government entitlement subsidies. Solar cannot survive without government subsidies, and the problem in this respect is government subsidies can never be recovered. It is not like student loans where the government investment (our money) is yeilding huge returns on the investment. Instead it is throwing money into a pit never to be seen again and 80% of it is going to foreign companies mainly China. Most of the remaining 20% is going to very short term labor where most of that work force is undocumented contract labor wages that has no tax witheld.

To add insult to injury, the electricity generated by solar PV is not taxed which is double jeopardy because not only is the energy produced by RE not taxed, it also takes away that much energy from conventional generators which was taxed and now lost.

What really hacks me off, and it should bother all of you; is the people installing RE systems can afford it without government free money. The money comes from all of you who cannot afford it in the way of higher electric bills and local/state/federal taxes.
