Monitoring accurate status of lead batteries in photovoltaic systems?

Hello, I am looking for a solution to solve this challenge since current systems typically measure voltage which in the long run is not accurate for measuring the status of lead batteries in photovoltaic systems. Could you help?

Several company's make battery "Gauges" which use a restive shunt to measure amps In and Out of a battery, and count the remaining capacity from it's monitoring. They are only a little better than a simple volt meter. And if you let a battery sit idle for 4 or 6 hours, you can get a accurate state of charge reading with a volt meter.
