    Using Nu Cool Refrigerator

I was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with the Nu Cool mini refrigerators. They are small and compressor-less. I thought they might be an option with my 12 volt solar system but I can't find any power specs. on them. What are you guys using?

The 20CF Energy Star Fridges, seem to be a pretty good system. You get all the bells and whistles of a top line fridge, and you just need an inverter to run it from. The fancy DC fridges are small, and if they break, you have to buy expensive parts, for only slightly better efficiency.

I suspect NuCool, if it is compressor less, has a ThermoElectric (Peltier Junction)

type of cooler module. They generally:

Draw a lot of power for a little bit of cooling
Achieve a 40F difference between hot side / cold side.

But they do work, and don't care much about power quality ( DC 14V, +- 3V )

Thanks for the fast reply Mike. Are you saying that you could actually run this thing on 12-15 volts since by....from Wikipedia link...."Simply connecting it to a DC voltage will cause one side to cool". How would one go about wiring that, knowing you are getting the right side?

Thanks again for all of your help!

there is no "right side" Apply power - one side heats, one cools, reverse power leads to swap hot/cold sides. But it's a real power hog.

I have an 80 litre camping fridge/freezer. It's great. When the motor is working to reach the desired temp, it uses 52w, and then when that temp has been reached it will sit on 6w. When I head out camping, I load that fridge up with rump steaks and drinks etc, and it works a treat with my solar setup. I keep the fridge in the camping trailer, where it's as cool as possible, so that helps.

I looked around for camping fridges a lot and that was the best fridge I could find with the lowest wattage use. Some I checked out used around 150w when the motor and compressor were working, so 52w is great.

I have had great success with Nova Cool, made in Canada. They specialize in smaller DC units, but they are great.
