    12vdc motor / 5,000 watt generator - ideas?

I have a 1/2 horsepower, 12vdc motor, and an 5,000 watt generator, Italian made, that I had forgotten about.

The motor is rated at the following:

    RPM: 1800
    Duty: Continuous
    Voltage: 12vdc - 36vdc
    Amperes: 40
    HP: 1/2

My question of you experienced folks is, do you think it would be a reasonable idea to connect this up to a solar array and battery bank, that could provide enough constant energy to run this? Even if only running it for up to eight hours, while suffering a blackout, would be nice. Of course, running 24 hours would be even better. It certainly wouldn't be very loud.

    Ideas? Input?

How much money is in your bank account to poor into a money pit?

To run that motor just 8 hours per day is 4 Kwh, or 12 Kwh for 24 hours.

At 8 hours depending on your location will cost you about $12K to $20K. Triple that for 24 hours. The fun part and money pit is $3000 of that is in batteries you get to replace every 4 to 5 years.

Thanks. I guess the guy who owned this before me didn't realize what sort of output he would have to have, in order to run this motor under a load. The idea sounded good at the time.

Are you asking if the solar can run the motor, to spin the generator ?

Just have the solar charge batteries to power an inverter in a blackout.

          Hi Mike,

No, I knew the batteries would run the motor. I just didn't know for how long they would, under a load. It just hit me that I had those parts, as well as others, here at my home. I am getting old, I suppose.

My initial plan is still in the works, with batteries running an inverter.
