So I just completed the build on my first solar panel, and in the process, I ended up breaking my fair share of cells. I don't imagine that it's good practice to simply throw them in the garbage, so does anybody have any tips on how to dispose of the broken cells properly? I'm thinking I might just have to wait until my city has its next hazardous waste disposal day. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

PV solar cells are made of extremely pure (not quite as pure as electronic semiconductor silicon) silicon with a tiny bit of silver and copper. The silicon originally started life as sand - you can just dispose of it normally. A large quantity would be worth recycling but its not hazardous.
On a side note, what would you say the all-in cost of your home made panel is?BSEE, R11, NABCEP, Chevy BoltEV, >3000kW installed -
Thanks for the quick response.
All in all, it was probably $200 or so for what turned out to be a roughly 60 watt panel at peak efficiency. Not exactly the most economical way to go, but it's been a good learning experience.Comment
