Hi J.P.M. Well, at least we know what we've got and can monitor it. While Barrett's dramatically increases our risk of developing esophageal cancer, with monitoring, we're far more likely to catch anything early enough to treat. I know two people who had that cancer and it's a miserable one. One lasted several years, the other was gone in a little over six months. Like I preach to folks about getting a colonsocopy, I now preach about not putting up with frequent heartburn and/or GERD. Get it checked out and treated. You may even be able to eliminate it with lifestyle changes but if not, there are good cheap meds that will help deal with it.

I am on a three year schedule so have had around five. The prep has changed considerably over the years as my doc fine tunes it. Last one was not as bad as I was expecting and I asked the doc if the prep had worked and he said it had. I agree that you should have the procedure as early in the AM as possible because you will be famished.I'd also suggest you eat fairly light meals two days before: I think it makes the prep a bit easier. My doc uses propofol and I'm not aware of anything during the procedure. Since I also have Barrett's esophagus that requires a regular endoscopy, we're getting the two procedures synched so they can be done at the same time. Presumably not with the same probe.

If i think about it, conscious sedation freaks me out a bit. It makes me want to have patients rights where a family member can observe the procedure. There are cases where doctors and dentists get caught doing things they shouldn't under general and sometimes conscious. I'm too sexy for that to not be the case.

A few days after the procedure, I always have these random flashbacks, or some times just the sounds (no visual) of what's going on. An extension of my last post about the self enema: one time I remember the nurse and doctor yelling at me "Mr. X, come on relax, don't fight it. Calm down. Put your arms down." I had my first prostate checkup a couple months back and it did not go well either. I guess I would make a poor homosexual male.

anesthesia doesn't work exactly the same for me. Shortly I realized I would be awake, so I just watched the picture
from the camera on the color screen. It looked fine to me.

Yep. I've had bad reactions to conscious sedation so I skip it. My first one was at around age 26 due to "deceleration injuries" and they found nothing; the second one was pretty recently and they took a biopsy. I was glad I was awake during it, because if I had been out I would have worried until the results came back. But since I was awake I saw what they biopsied and it looked like nothing at all; they were just being cautious.

Had to call the wife in frustration. But she couldn't without saying 'remember? you need to relax to do this' with a piercing smile of revenge.

I feel your pain. I woke up from extreme pain when Dr Pooper filled me up with compressed air. Fortunately Dr Feel Good was quick with more juice.

Hey at least you got to the bathroom. On that same first procedure it happened to me in Recover Room filled with patience when I lifted my leg to put my shorts back on. It embarrassed my friend Jim, but not me. I was still feeling good and belted out COOL MAN like any good drunk would do.

After the first time I was rolled into recovery room filled with about dozen patients and literally felt like my intestines were going to explode. I tried getting out of bed but nurses were telling me I hadn't recovered yet off the feel-goodies. Didn't matter, I was going to pop so I almost fainted twice getting up and then walking 5 feet to the restroom in the center of the circular room. I made it to the throne just in time to feel the biggest gust o wind ever.... it lasted so long I fell asleep during it and I think it was still going when I woke up a few seconds later, almost falling over. To my dismay, this was a large bathroom with extra echo'ey tiles everywhere so I exited to laughter and giggles for the next few mins. One nurse shooshed em with 'happens to everyone', the other nurse chimed within a second 'that's gotta be the record'. I wasn't embarrassed because I immediatelg drifted off into my drug induced rest.
