  • Need advice on reroofing before PV system install

This board has been a very valuable resource as I have been doing my research on a grid-tie PV system for my home. I am planning on moving forward with installation in a month or two, but before I do, I have to decide whether to reroof. My current asphalt shingle roof has 5-10 years of life left. Any opinions on whether the cost involved in unmounting and remounting 10 230W panels to reroof 5-10 years in the future is prohibitive enough to justify putting down a new roof before system installation?
    Thanks!

I was 15 years into 30 year shingles, and put down a new layer under the panels beforehand.

I'd suggest you get the roofer and solar installer together, and have the installer locate the mounts, then the roofer re-shingle, and seal the mounts. Then drop the panels on top. Panels will shade and protect the roof and it will last a long time under the panels. Roofer knows how to not leak, PV guy does not.
