Can Evacuated Tubes Be Mounted Less-Than Horizontal?

I have seen a lot of evacuated tube solar thermal systems in my day...bringing down heat of course. Working fine.

But today I saw a system which used evacuated tubes mounted such that they were not just flat, but the header pipe was actually an inch or two LOWER than the bottom of the tubes. And, the system was working well.

How is this possible? I thought it was necessary to keep the header pipe higher than the bottom of the tubes so that the gas could condense at the header and fall to the tube bottom, then repeat.

    What am I missing?

I've got no idea. Sounds odd to me.

Could be working through conduction and just not taking advantage of fluid convection.
