could be a bad mixing valve allowing hot water to seep back into the cold line.NABCEP certified Technical Sales Professional

Possibly when no hot water is being drawn for a long period of time with heat on the panels the combination of an inlet check valve and no pressure relief valve is forcing hot water back into the cold line rather than just a "seepage".SunnyBoy 3000 US, 18 BP Solar 175B panels.Comment

Mixing valves are easily serviced, just loosen the unions on the mixing valve, pull it out and clean the check valves.Comment

Where is the expansion tank for the water system? If the solar storage tank expands toward the expansion tank on the cold water side of the system (like the well tank) it is possible for the hot water to expand back past one of the cold water tee's. If the cold water tap is turned on before the hot water tap it will pull that heated water into the cold tap for a short period and then correct itself. This will be worse if you have short piping runs and a large storage tank.Comment

Double Check Valve
I had this on our installation, problem was hot water passing through the thermostatic mixer valve and exiting through the cold water input side.
Solution was to put a non-return valve (Double Check Valve) on the cold water input, so cold water only flowed into the thermostatic valve and not hot water out.Comment
