I recently installed low temperature mini split heat pump to burn up excess generation. Just for the heck of it I set up a comparison between heating with wood compared to heating with the mini split on net metered PV. Using rudimentary calculations, the yearly cost including capital costs are far better for the solar and mini split option than wood. If someone has the room on the roof for more panels and doesnt have a wood stove or chimney its a no brainer (except where the grid id unreliable and a non electric backup would be useful).

Post the comparison.
After this winter that is.
The mini split and PV are certainly less work and mess. (At least on a grid tie)NABCEP certified Technical Sales Professional

I am going to use it as supplemental heat for one floor of the house with oil backup and wood boiler available. It will have a KWH meter on the leads but I dont plan to do a formal comparison except look at the wood piles in the spring and see how I did compared to last winter. My house does drop to minus 15 deg F on occasion but if this saves me for 90% of the normal winter days its worth it to me.Comment
