Just got two free ASE-300-DGF/50 panels...What next?

    Hi,

I just got two free ASE-300-DGF/50 panels (no micro inverters). I already had a basic Harbor Freight 45 watt setup, and a inexpensive 250 grid tie inverter working. I also have a small 600w and 300w inverter. Now I'm trying to figure out the best way to add the two new panels. Far as I can tell the specs for the new panels are:

Power (max.) Pp (watts) 300 W
Voltage at maximum-power point Vp (volts) 50.6 V
Current at maximum-power point Ip (amps) 5.9 A
    Open-circuit voltage Voc (volts) 63.2 V
    Short-circuit current Isc (amps) 6.5 A

My goal is to go off grid some day, but for now I just want to reduce power consumption, and have a really good backup power solution. I suspect that I will need to replace the charge controller first, but any feedback would be great.

    Thanks,
    Sanford

They are pretty nice; I got lucky. The lady I got them from just wanted to use them as room dividers. She had someone put them in the closet, then she realized that they were to heavy for her to move and just wanted them gone ASAP

Do you know much about them? The modules are missing the diode housing, so I'm not sure what all that impacts. They seem to adjust down to the lowest or average voltage detected in the panel array.

Schott used to manufacture them at our facility in Billerica, Mass. Yup, they're heavy alright. Many installers affectionately refer to them as the hernia-matic 300s.

By diode housing do you mean j-box? I wouldn't consider using them to generate power if they aren't complete, as you run some pretty high risks. Feel free to PM me and we can take the discussion off-line.

        They make wonderful coffee tables.

          Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to PM after about 7 more posts (forum limit). But could you try to PM me regarding the risks?

          Thanks,

            Hi,

As far as the J-Box, I called it a diode housing based on a picture from the Schott website. The panels I have are missing the cables with MC connectors and the large cover that attaches to the rear of the panel. I just see a POS and NEG connection in small plastic slots.

            Thanks,

Anyone else using these typre of panels?

Does anyone else have ASE-300-DGF/50 panels in use?
