  • Solar assessment charge

After we had some issues (storm damage) with our grid tie panels, we had to contact the installer, which is charging upwards of $450 just to come and assess the damage and how to fix.

Is this par for the course? We find it excessive. That is on top of the whatever we will have to pay to fix the system.

Seems quite steep if they are only coming out to take a few pics and create a quote to repair. My first thought is that they don't really want the job guessing there's far more profit installing new systems than in repairing the old.

If the assessment cost can be applied to the repairs I would okay with that. However, just to come out and look, plus the repair costs seems steep.

it's just to look at it. The repairs are on top of that. Without us paying that, they wouldn't come. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find another installer willing to come. Apparently once somebody installs a system here, that company "owns" it and nobody else is willing to work on it due to liability. That is what one company told us. Others either don't return calls or say they can't do it.

To say we are beyond frustrated would be an understatement. To the point of even thinking of dismantling the system completely. It's only 4 years old.

Is the system not under warranty?

Not for storm damage. Try homeowner's insurance.

Exactly, they quickly determined it wasn't their responsibility and we were responsible for all costs.

Well, unless is excluded in the policy, the damage might be covered by your homeowner's coverage.

Seems steep. My installer only charged $300 to come out and physically move and reconnect up to 3 panels to make space for installing a patio cover.
