That looks like a good monitor. When I first started my EV project I used a device known as a Cell Log but later found out it drew its power from only the first cell which was fine for short term testing of RC batteries. However for long term that vampire drain would slowly cause an imbalance to creep in.
With that kind of inexpensive device I can understand the logic of building two packs rather than one big pack that would have been hard to move and hard to fit in the nooks and crannies of a trailer.
