SMA sunny sensor box good investment? (discontinued product)

above link has instruction manual for this gizmo which has it's own temperature and solar cell to monitor solar panel performance. Costs about $100. I guess if your panels get dirty it can warn you to clean them and it serves as a control sensor to let you know if the rest of the panels are preforming to expected range?

It'll warn you to clean the array if it's solar sensor is kept clean. If its not kept clean, it'll indicate irradiance input decline from surface fouling to be about the same as array performace decline from surface fouling. Not sure what that'll get you.

Also, the solar sensor's +/- 8 % accuracy is pretty wide.

Also, contact temp. measurement will need to be compensated for as it will distort local cell temperature making that local temp. different and probably higher than the rest of the array. Also, and perhaps a minor point, it'll also change the local cell temp. effective time constant.

Nice toy maybe, but I'd not put a whole lot of faith in it's output accuracy or precision without some calibration efforts.
