12 volt panels ran in series to 120 volt

So this maybe a newb question but, why can't I take 10x 12 volt panels and run them in series to get 120 volts?

Is it too dangerous? Can't be, there would be people out there doing it if that was the only limiting factor.

Is it difficult/costly to get the right amperage out of a system like this?

Does it require costly additional hardware..more so than an inverter...coupled with the loss of energy when an inverter is used?

    BLUF, is it possible?

You can but that has nothing to do 240/120 volts AC power. from your utility You are talking DC power from solar panels.

No not really as Grid Tied AC systems run well above 120 VDC, more like 400 to 500 VDC. But I think you are talking about 120 VDC with batteries and with any battery capacity pushing it could vaporize you if you f up.

120V dc would be just fine for arc welding, and with a battery bank - you could really damage things.

DC is very hard to control, once it arcs, it's very hard to put the arc out, most DC fuses and switches stop at 48V. Getting something to manage 120VDC will be rare and co$tly.
