PetersenDean Warranty Does NOT show up on contract

    Hey all,

So I've been doing research on a number of major companies in order to find the best value system.

I received a contract from PetersenDean, which claims a "5 Star 30 year protection plan." Production guarantee is for 30 years at 60%. 5.Star.Protection.Plan.020315.pdf

But in the fine print of the contract, it says, "To access your warranty: Please call Contractor at 1-800-564-0362 24 hours a day, or you can log on to petersendean and go to the customer support link and fill out a customer support form. Please refer to your actual warranty document for terms and conditions."

This is super shady. I don't plan to call. Does anybody know the fine print of their contract?

Howdy, so heres the thing about warranty's, first its very rare for panels to stop working, it happens but if you have tier 1 panels its very rare. If you go with a A grade inverter like SMA its the same story, we do have a few of these go bung but it generally happens quite quickly like in the first 12 months so a standard warranty is fine. I wouldnt get too hung up on warrantys but hey thats just my opinion, cheers

What you describe sounds like what you would do to collect on your warranty, not what you have to do to see what it covers.
If the warranty terms are not in the contract itself (not even by reference to a separate document which they would have to make available too before signing) then you do not legally have any warranty.

On the other hand, the warranty and production guarantee as shown in your attached PDF are simply absurd if you interpret the language according to common English grammar.

      1. The panels are not warrantied at all until the beginning of the 25th year. Up to that point apparently the manufacturer's warranty is all that you get. And even for years 25-30 you do not have a claim against them unless the panel has produced less than 60% of its expected (not original) output for a full year.
If it stops producing completely, they will replace it after you have waited a year.
      2. The performance guarantee is 60% of measured original year output (not what they told you it would produce) and that output is reduced by the predicted degradation of the panels before they do the 60% test. You can only collect at the end of a five year period of low performance, and only if you have kept records of the first year's production and the five year period in question. So, panel warranty aside, if the output goes to zero at the beginning of year N, and stays at zero, you will not have any claim until it has been at zero for more than two years. (That is what it would take to produce a five year period with average output below 60%.)

Like most all production warranties, this one is for marketing purposes, making it mostly useless and therefore, as you seem to be finding out, not much use in the decision making process.

And unless the warranty terms are written in your contract, who knows what version they will try to enforce when the time comes.

What great price per watt did PetersonDean offer on an installation that comes with what from senior members on this board described as a nonexistent warranty?
