They did make a few minor mistakes along the way and were open and honest with me about it. Those mistake weren't huge deals but did extend the work out a little longer. There's also one other minor cosmetic thing that I'd probably do differently if I was doing the installation again. My point is that I've read a good amount of information and while I'm really far from a technical expert, I know a lot more now than I did when I started the process, mostly thanks to you and other knowledgeable members of this board.

I actually did offer to split the referral fee with my friend. It's not a huge sum of money (it's $500) and while it would be nice, I would never knowingly lead a good friend astray over a referral fee. Plus it's small enough to not even tempt me. He's somewhat interested in solar and is doing some of his own research on it. If he decides he wants to go ahead with it, he'll get quotes. Having one person who has a system that my friend can look at and ask questions about the installation couldn't hurt. Maybe he sees something he doesn't like and can now tell any installer to avoid doing that. Either way it's better than seeing nothing.
Thank you. None of us is as smart as all of us. I'd offer an opinion that not all, or even many folks are inclined to act as you do.

To me, and FWIW only, referrals are, even when free and even when unsolicited, still mostly useless. When money is involved, no good can come of it to anyone, except the vendor. Anything else is naïve, wishful thinking. Seems like a no brainer.

A respectful suggestion: If your friend wants advice, send him here for answers he can't get on his own, or for opinions a bit closer to the devil's advocate side of reality.

Referral is good too, I got referred by my friend at work, I got a quote at his price $3.45/W for LG300, otherwise I will get 4.1/w. If I refer to someone, I will make sure they get the same treatment as I got. I am in the process of choosing solar installer. I think I will go with SunPower for 3.6/W before tax, 2.52/W after tax credit
