    Surge Protection Device (SPD) in Hybrid PV System

    Hi everyone,

    Where in a Hybrid PV System would you install SPD's ? AC and DC and how do you size them?

    I'm sure some experienced people over here are able to give the answer.

    At the output of the panels and at the AC service entrance. They are sized to match your wallet as large as you can afford. The real question should be do they do anything. Are you in a Lightning prone area and has your house been struck by Lightning.

      I install both the Delta and the Midnight SPD's At the PV combiner box, input to charge controller and output of the Inverter and the several remote loads fed by the inverter, 1500' of underground AC cable could still pick up an induced surge.

      And it's all moot if you do get a direct hit, the wires in the conduit melt their insulation and need to be replaced even. The electronics will all be toast.

        So actually only between the inverter and the grid connection and between the inverter and the PV String (s). it makes no sence to install also between the AC inverter output and the House Load? And how about between the inverter and the battery bank?

          The batteries are about the very best thing to absorb a blast of power, and anything that cooks an entire battery bank, will also fry any SPD you had on it. You gotta shunt it away while it's still outdoors, at the PV array, or the 120VAC feedlines.

            99% of all Transient Voltage Surges are from the utility making it the only place you should use one if at all.

            Like I said 99% of TVSS enters from the utility line side. That leaves 1% from a direct strike to the panels. Batteries have nothing to do with TVSS
