  • Any value in an old TED 5000?

We are in the process of selling one house (which does not have solar) - it had a TED 5000 (that I have already de-installed).

The question is whether it is worthwhile to reinstall in our new house (with a SolarEdge SE10000 inverter), or just leave it to gather dust. The main advantage I see is that it is easier to monitor consumption that I cannot currently do with SolarEdge monitoring.

What are my options with consumption monitoring with SolarEdge - I gather there are things that one can get to help with this. How well do they work, and how much does this cost? The datasheet I did find suggested a cellular connection - is there a Z-Wave variant of the thing that I could use instead?

Or is there something else I ought to be looking at that would be easier/cheaper?

All solaredge inverters do production monitoring and all you need is an ethernet cable to your router.
you can add a consumotion meter to the inverter wich will give you consumotion as well as prducton monitoring.

The more I read, the more this looks like the way to go. Next time I talk to the installer, I will ask him for a ballpark $$ estimate.

The TED was nice in its day, but it only briefly had cloud support when Google offered it.

TED offers free cloud monitoring and you can send to pvoutput if you like

t had a TED5k for a while and it worked ok, but that was on an my last house right before I installed solar. The PLC over exisiting wiring was glitchy but that was probablt a local issue.

I am still using the Eagle monitoring device which was a one time fee of $98 and duplicating it to PVoutput. But TED allows for easier circuit monitoring. Eagle is sending exact data your utility receives. Pvoutput collects the solaredge data and finds the difference to approximate a 5 minute consumption.

But the SE method is nice and self contained.

Hmm, that's interesting. But for a TED 5000, it isn't free - 15$/yr. It probably would be the lowest-cost option however.

I stopped doing TED firmware updates some years ago - the rate at which they released them slowed to a crawl. At one point they had the Google thing in the gateway menu - for Commander to work, it sort of seems like they would have needed to update the firmware yet again. The TED remote display croaked years ago - I think I pitched it when I was cleaning up. I will need to unpack and plug in the gateway and see whether a firmware update is possible on that box that will enable the commander.

They do have a special price for upgrade to TED Pro. But I might as well get a price on the SE monitoring before spending any money on it.

I have one laying around somewhere that I am no longer using. No idea where it ended up however - I removed it from the panel box when we moved, and it just never made sense to install it at our new house.. If it ever turns up, I can give a shout.
