not sure if it is branded by them but made by someone else? yes the software platform I use SolarNetwork is open source and it supports a whole bunch of modbus devices - kWh meters, inverters, PLCs, charge controllers etc.

Here are two versions of documentation that should help. All of the critical registers you would want to touch are the same on both, but you'll have to see what specific implementation of this the CS inverters have.

Yes, I'd guess that if the Canadian Solar inverter does eventually comply with SunSpec, it would require a firmware update. You might be able to get more information from them.
OK cool - I like what SunSpec is trying to do, it's pretty ambitious but should be a catalyst into showing the scale of what PV as a generation method can achieve.
