Hi, I have a 2 panel small system with 3 batteries tied together and the primary battery that has the leads from the panels on it has a lot of corrosion on the positive terminal. What can I do to prevent this and is it blocking some of the charging ability?

charge the batteries up so the can sit for a couple days, you need to take all the cables off, scrub all the terminals with water and a brush (but don't get tap water under the cell caps and into the cells) to clean them up. After all the cleaning, check the voltage of each battery, the have sat idle for a couple hours and should be giving you an accurate reading of their charge level.

Wait a day, and then measure the voltages again. If a battery has lost voltage, it's fading out on you, and plan on replacing it.
Since the batteries have sat a while, and the cases have dried off, pop the caps and add distilled water per Mfg's instructions.
When you put the batteries back into the system, wipe a thin film of petrolatum jelly on them, that's the best and cheapest stuff to use on the terminals and cables.

Little late now but the best corrosion inhibitor is No-Ox-Id A Special. It is what the pros use and will last 30 years if used correctly. All wire skinners and terminals should not be without it.MSEE, PEComment

Bump.
I read a tip that said to heat Vaseline until it was liquid, then dip the end of your cable in it so it wicks up under the insulation for added protection. That sounds better than just rubbing some on the outside of the cable before crimping on the lug.
Does anyone know if this can be done with dielectric grease or NO-OX-ID A-Special?Comment

No not to my knowledge. No_Ox_Id is primarly used on wire skinners, and terminal connection mating surfaces to lock out air and water. Works really good on battery term plates. Telecom and electrical have been using the product for over 50 years. I have battery installation over 30 years old with no corrosion failures.MSEE, PEComment

on a more serious note... how far can one of those 2oz tubs No Ox Id go.... like .. how many terminals would 2oz protect.Comment

Well those are batteries you cannot afford. They are used in telephone offices. They are a pure lead battery called Round Cells now made by GE.
A lifetime and more connections than you will ever use. Only takes a very light coat. Model Rail Road users love it. Just clean off the track with acetone, apply a light coat of grease and polish it off. Will last a life time problem free operation.MSEE, PEComment

2. Those round cells are impressive. The idea is that since the plates do not have to support themselves you can use the soft pure lead?
3. 40 year life in Float service. Are they any good at all in deep discharge service?
4. Do you have to do periodic electrolyte drain and replacement to get that life or do you just top them off with distilled water every now and then for 40 years?SunnyBoy 3000 US, 18 BP Solar 175B panels.Comment
