  • Units for wire size

    While looking up the AWG to Amps table, I noticed other units of measurements like mm, mm2, etc.
    https://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm

    Are these just alternate units of measurements, or are the wires somehow different?

    For example,
    6AWG = 4.1148mm = 13.3mm2

    I'm just wondering what the "squared" is about, because the sq. root of 13.3 is not 4.1148.

    mm^2 is a measure of area. 4.1148mm is the diameter or width of the wire.

    Area = pi X r^2 or (1/2 X4.1148)^2 X Pi = 2.0574 X 2.0574 X pi = 13.3mm^2

      mm^2 is metric wire sizing. It is used commonly everywhere but North America. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge.
