can the power inverter be left on all the time? I have an outlet upstairs and don't want to be going up and down to turn the inverter on and off.

In 34 months of operation, I have yet to touch the on/off switch on my inverter. It turns itself on/off every morning/nite. The power went off once and sure enough, the inverter took care of its own affairs and came back on shortly after power was restored. See your inverter manual for how your inverter operates. -
So I guess they are made to be left on? That they kinda go to sleep and kick on when there is a power draw? Thank You

Depends. An inverter that runs from batteries will continue to drain the battery even if there isn't any load. That can drop the battery level low enough to hurt it.
If the inverter is one that is grid tied like the one JPM is talking about, then you having nothing to do or worry about.

Could you please give me your opinion about 6 volt batteries vs. 12 volt batteries when setting up a solar power system. I ordered 4 100 watt panels.Comment

add a remote switch option to your inverter. Some inverters draw a significant amount of power even when there is no load.Comment

As for your panels. Again it is better to purchase higher wattage panels like 2 x 200 watt panels then lower wattage like 4 x 100 watt panels because a 200 watt panel usually cost less per watt then a 100 watt panel. But is 400 watts enough?
Final question would be what type of charge controller are you getting? It better be a true MPPT type because a PWM (while cheaper) will waste panel wattage if you have more than 200 watts.Comment

with regard to inverters and duty cycle, if you are using a cheap off brand inverter, I would not use it 24X7,. If it is a good quality name brand pure sine, is likely much better suited for continuous duty cycle. either way any inverter running from battery, just waiting for a load is a waste.Comment
