Hello, has anyone had experience in purchasing a full kit online and then trying to organize installation themselves? If so I would love some feed back on how much the electrician charged to install the system? I can work out all the other costs myself just want to know a fair price for installation of the panels and inverter.

I am a solar installer in Australia now and looking to move to the US so an indication of install cost will help my decision. -
Don't know if Fair Price But...
My installer charged me $1.5/W. 5kW system would cost you $7,500 to install it. That included the permits, installation plans and application to SoCal Edison for the rebate and Edison permit to operate. Some say I got screwed. So maybe this it the highest price to expect to pay.

Hey Naptown, most the jobs in Australia are single story concrete tile or corrugated iron roofs. Anything up to around 7kw we do with 2 guys, larger than that we use 3. We have been doing it for about 6 years now. How long does a 5kw install take on a shingle roof? Praps there are more/different rules and regs. in the US?Comment

My wife is an Aussie from NSW and her parent's solar install is what made me get serious about getting a PV system. I think solar might be the only thing in Australia that is cheaper than in the US.Comment

Yeah you are probably right, you can have a 5kw system fully installed is Aust using SMA and a Tier one Chinese panels for $6,500 (this includes about $3,900 in Gov help so really about $10,400) signs of a mature market I guess.Comment

maybe there is not much in the way of Government help (funding) in USA.
I just came back from a trip to Japan. There were quite a lot of houses with solar there.Comment

sorry, i have no idea how much a system is in USA or what rebates are available. I was just thinking that if it was so much more expensive than Aus, it may not have any rebate assistance.
please excuse my ignorance.
we are pumping out 5kw systems for $4495 at the moment in Queensland area.
$5500 if need an SMAComment

It is not the lack of government help, in Australia the government only help with STC's, a discount to the end user on kW installed. I have spoken with numerous installers here in the US now, the average for a standard install is $0.90 - $1.00 per watt. I think it is because there is not enough work to justify an infrastructure, if you are only doing one job per week I guess you have to drag a bigger margin out of it. Contractors in Aus charge me $0.20 per watt to install a standard system, however I do have work for them every day.Comment
