  • Hi folks I'm new and have a million dollar question.

ericturbine.jpg Hi folks, I have a million dollar question. I contacted tech support at a sight called sunelec.com and asked them for a 200 watt panel for my 12 volt system and also a charge controller to go with it.

The prices seemed way low compared to other sights.

The panel they recommended was ES-A-210-FA3. I looked this up on their sight and it's like 18.3 Vmp? Will this hurt my 12 volt system. Currently I'm using 4, soon to be 5 marine batteries.
I'm new to all this. Thanks for any advice.

    Eric

Thanks for letting me know so quickly. How could you tell that? I'm curious so next time I'll know how to buy these without asking for help each time.

O.K. thanks for the link. Have you ever used the sunelec.com website? I wanted to buy the panel after you said it was for 12 volts and now it has a limit of 4 panels. I just don't want to buy 4 panels at once, I want to buy one panel at a time so I can look them over and take my time installing them to my system. What site do YOU use? thanks, E

Some people are happy with the dealer and some not - I haven't used them so can not offer experience.

One constant comment is that tech support and other service leaves a lot to be desired.

If you want a cheap price you are not going to get as much service, thats they way it is. Some sites offer more service than Sunelectric but for you case theirs may be adequate.

One of the reasons why they can offer a lower price is they buy overstocks and goods from companies that have gone out of business. For an small offgrid 12 volt battery system, the odds are a orphan panel or sone that is a "b" grade will work fine, but for a permanent grid tied installation by an installer they generally prefer to buy panels from manufactures that may be around for awhile.

The reason for a minimum of four panels is that they are essentially large pieces of glass with aluminum frames. They are oversized and need to be shipped by freight and the cost to build a crate to succesfully ship one panel is quite high with a high chance of damage. The bigger the order the thicker the crate and the stiffer the package.

I have had good luck with the "Alternate Energy Store" which is New England based but realize that they are going to have to go through and charge for the same freight issues. Small freight in general is a pain so you may want cosider talking to companies customer service to see what the maximum size UPS panel they can ship and but multiple smaller panels. The smaller panels tend to be a bit more physically robust then the larger panels.

Whatever you do dont buy Harbor freight panels. They have them at the stores but many have reported issues with them

                Alternate Energy Store?

Yikes! ha ha... figures, harbor freight is what is currently on my roof. It makes me a pot of coffee every morning and does a load of laundry every afternoon. The only problem being the cost per Watt is way too high for me to want to keep buying 'them.' I tried googling Alternate Energy Store and couldn't find the right link. Another thing that worried me about the sunelec site is that they don't take visa and want me to start a paypal account. I fear the worste. Is it really a legit company? (sunelec) When I talk to them on the phone I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling at all.
