    Mounting solar panels to rooftop

What is the best way to mount the panels to a composition shingle roof?
Common sense tells me they can't be fastened directly to the roof, so is
there a minimum amount of clearance that needs to be allowed, or any other considerations I need to address?

there are mounting legs and rails, that bolt thru the shingles to the roof studs, and you should have at least 4" for air circulation.
