  • Help/Tips with this inherited solar setup

    So we have a client that has this rigged up solar setup to remote view the top of the landfill. Apparently the solution works for a few days then needs to be reset and fires up again. The goal of this is to power an access point and PTZ camera whenever possible but also to have it be low maintenance (auto power on when resources are available and power off/charge when depleted). Any pointers/recommendations to make this happen would be great. Appears to be (2) 100w panels, Hykolity 12V 100AH Deep Cycle AGM SLA VRLA Battery, P20L controller, WindyNation 1500w Inverter Thanks for any help!

    The inverter is way too large, and it's idle power draw likely exceeds the Cam & AP consumption.

    Any chance the cam and AP can run from 12V, instead of up-converting to 120V to plug in a 12V wall wart to power them ? Or use a 12 - 5V downconverter ?

      Now would be a good time to check out your battery's health. Old sulfated batteries will appear to charge up fast but will have very little capacity. This recommendation is in addition to Mike90250's recommendation to replace the inverter with a properly sized inverter
      A properly sized system shouldn't need an auto reset for the inverter and , only in the event of an extended low sun event would the inverter ever shut down.

        I agree with both. You need to go with a smaller (maybe a 300watt) inverter or increase the battery size along with adding the appropriate panel wattage. You are limited with that 20 amp CC so your system can't grow that much. It all comes down to the watt hours your camera system burns each day and the amount of good sunlight days.

          Thanks for the info guys, unfortunately the PTZ camera is 24VAC. I'll get the inverter swapped for a 300w version and check on the battery do you think this could be keeping it from coming back online on its own?

            If you are referring to the inverter coming back online, I know that most inverters come back online once low voltage disconnect has shut it down. Most controllers have a LVD function on their load terminals that will reconnect the load when the batteries recover but generally you wouldn't connect an inverter to these terminals. They are mostly intended for lighting control.

              Yes, hoping we could have it auto restore power back to everything once resources become available after charging (not sure if that is even a feasible option with solar?). Cant find many resources available online for a setup like this, most ive seen are just built to spec for 24/hr use or just occasional manual use. We just need it to work as much as possible as there is only room for the 2 panels but its not critical that it is always on.
