  • SHS world projects and truck batteries

Please permit me to ask about batteries again.

I've been reading some interesting stuff about the preperation of SHS world projects (tenders).

Some advise to use non-deep cycle "truck batteries" (SLI) in areas where (true) deep cycle batteries are not available.

    My question is:
Is there any design difference between SLI "truck batteries" and the usual SLI "car battery", both FLA ?

    or

is it only because of the higher capacity that they recommend truck batteries and shallow cycling?

SLI batteries (vehicle Starting Lighting, Ignition) batteries have many thin plates to have lots of reactive surface area for generation of high amps for starting, and are quickly recharged to full in 10 minutes.
Deep cycle batteries are designed with just a few, thick plates, to endure hours of discharge and the be recharged the next day. SLI batteries will fail within weeks of this type of usage.

      Ok. I can follow you.

So, there is no difference between what they called "truck battery" and "car battery".

Those who are in charged of for example worldbank projects are I suppose well aware of the facts that you described above.

how can they conclude thay a truck battery will give "longer PV life"?

by taking drugs ? i have no idea how they can claim that.

Note that both AGM and GEL are spill proof, but only AGM can be recharged quickly in solar applications, GEL requires long slow recharge. There are many used GEL batteries removed from service, that are resold as "solar batteries" and they will only work for a short while, as fast charging in solar ruins them.

It sounds like they are playing with words. Their definition of "longer PV life" probably mean just a few more cycles then a Car battery since most trucks have a larger SLI type battery then cars.

Well, there are a lot of people not so fortunate as most members here and unfortunately not living in areas where you easily can get deep cycle batteries.

I read in a evaluation report of an SHS project in rural areas in Sri Lanka that non-deep cycle batteries can last +/- 2.5 years loading everday some dc lamps, tv dc, fans and charging mobile phones, problably daily shallow cycling.

            Amazing.
