So it's just mppt for an individual panel in essence... What about string optimizers?

Like Tigo optimizers? Same idea. all have their proprietary communications circuitry but the optimization, I believe is basically the same. I understand Tigo optimizers will work off grid. Solar edge work in conjunction with their grid tie inverters so, no off grid.

Tigo is very different from solaredge. Solaredge has MPPT as well as buck and boost and monitoring.
tigo has buck and monitoring.
