Yes the MN combiner and proper breakers would work. With such a pieced together system - "make lemonade out of lemons" as you say - for the difference in price I might consider the larger MNPV6 rather than the smaller MNPV3 combiner as you seem like you might be on the road to a lager system with more strings in the future. The larger combiner would give you room to grow without having to have a "do over" in that area. AND/OR it would let you over panel for certain times of the year and turn strings off at other times.
