  • Need some advice

I currently have a kid, 2x285w panels and 4 x6v costco golf batteries running at 12v bank. I have a cistern and well pump in cistern to pressurize big tank once per day. We have a tiny house so our uses are very little. We use 1kw per day, 20 gallons water and lots of firewood..

I have to use a 5kw honda gen to run pump. Pump is 1/2hp franklin 110v. The problem is it draws 67a surge at start. Running amps are 10a.

I would like to use inverter to run pump. Looked at grunfos sqflex but too much $$$$ for us.

Want to also get rid of costco batteries and buy trojan LR16 x 4 at 24v. Would also like to buy 2 more panels.

    My questions are,

Are trojan lr16 good choice for 24v system? Are they good batteries?
I need an inverter for 24v, is cotek 3k or4k low freq a good choice?
Is there a low surge pump that doesnt cost too much?
We haul water to the cistern, we dont have a well.
My pump is 2 wire so i dont think soft start is option.

How deep is the water in the well ? I assume you pump 1x a week to fill cistern? Would a kid power pump work, foot treadle pump ?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treadle_pump And sometimes, the generator is the right tool for the job.
As to inverters, you have to read the specs to see which can supply that 70A starting surge for 2 seconds. (8.5Kw) I doubt the 3Kw inverter can
That will also pull 355A off the 24v battery for 2 seconds, which means proper cables will be required to prevent the inverter from an under voltage shutdown.

I had the same choice, a $4000 pump that might take a week to replace or a $4000 inverter to run a common $200 pump.

Use a DC pump and Trojans are a lot better battery than Costco.
