well if i wanted to put up with a bank of used 4 x 4 / marine batteries it is possible to get by in the summer but with winter on the way (australia) in 3 months or so i dont want to be in the dark. so sure its not free, but still not at all expensive, my power usage is quite low so i would need about $2000 worth of FLA deep cycle (500AH). that would be plenty for me and if i got 5yrs very good value. grid power is about 30c KW/H so at $400 a year for my off grid compares to $1000 a year grid usage i was paying before. although the reason i went solar was the grid is unreliable , will never use it again, at least one junked battery iv picked up for $10 was worth while, this is a 150AH golf cart battery nothing wrong with it. found it at a car junk yardDSCN0002.JPG
