several things I had not thought of. makes me think is less viable than I had originally thought. given environmental concerns and losses the return would not be worth it.4X Suniva 250 watt, 8X t-105, OB Fx80, dc4812vrfComment

I was thinking more about what happens to the ground under a pond and other things around a very large storage facility where the seawater is not separated from the environment by a barrier.Comment

No offense intended to you at all, but the devil is often in the details. Those things (the details) are often/usually the type of stuff the tree huggers and "you could just do this" crowd leave out or more likely don't consider at all.Comment

I'm more of a tree climber anyway. Love to get real high.4X Suniva 250 watt, 8X t-105, OB Fx80, dc4812vrfComment

Yes it is possible but you would have to be crazy to do it.MSEE, PEComment

I bet the batteries on Catalina just let them get away without idling backup generators... yup, it was done to reduce NoX emissions:
littleharbor, what is the sentiment towards solar power on the island? There was some talk of using a lot of it at one time ( http://originenergypartners.com/down...ion%20Plan.pdf ).

Many islands have on again off again reliability, and 3 to 4 times as expensive. so solar power even with batteries makes more sense. You could also just as well pay to maintain those same batteries when the grid is on. Solar would be Auxiliary power unless grid tied.4X Suniva 250 watt, 8X t-105, OB Fx80, dc4812vrfComment

We do have frequent power failures over here. It's an interesting sight to see my house the only one with lights on when we get a failure at night2.2kw Suntech mono, Classic 200, NEW Trace SW4024Comment

Being that this a privately owned Island, the Wrigley family of chewing gum fame owns it they, and only they ,have the power to approve or deny any kind of commercial solar installation. I can't say I know how they feel about that. I will say that in Avalon where there are privately owned residences there are very few rooftop arrays. Don't know why as we have plenty of sun here. I personally have a small off-grid setup.
