any suggestions for a charge controller
any suggestions for a charge controller for this turbine? -

so now winter is almost upon the northern hemisphere , does anyone here use a wind turbine during the winter? have read that you need to dump excess power when the batteries are full.Comment

The general information given on this site for wind turbines is,
Unless the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off most of the time and has no interference from buildings or trees that will interrupt a clean air flow then it is not worth while.
yes you do generally need a dump load, same as hydro to keep a load on the unit when the batteries a not loading it.
I have lived in a house on Prince of Wales island in the torres strait where a small wind turbine was effective, but there is a consistent trade wind there for a large part of the year.Comment

hi bala thanks for the reply, how are you going up there? yes i have a windy place here, my house is on a strip of land between 2 large coastal lakes, this is very flat and i am about 2kms from the coast. i have been thinking of wind before i ever thought of solar because of the wind i get here. it was the 130km/h wind nearly blew the front of my house in back in april that brought me to this site. that wind caused the power line to sag out the front of my house that led to the truck taking it out. all this week its been blowing 50km/h so in winter it would do the trickComment

While most people here do not have wind turbine experience (or want it due to their location) there are manufacturers that make charge controllers for both solar and wind.
I have no experience with any but I would stick to name brand types. A quality manufacturer of solar charge controllers and also make ones for wind is Xantrex. Although there may be better ones out there.
I would think you can contact the wind turbine manufacturer to get their input as what to use.Comment

Midnite Solar also offers wind turbine support for their Classic models. The core of it is a voltage to current curve table which allows the CC to be customized to the speed/torque/power versus wind speed characteristics of specific turbine models. To provide the dump load function you also need to included the Midnite Solar Clipper ahead of the ClassicSunnyBoy 3000 US, 18 BP Solar 175B panels.Comment
