    Who Owns this Forum

I think a while back I heard that this forum/ Community board is provided by a solar company that sells to us retail customers. I am now ready to drop some bucks and would like to give it to those who provided me with all of this valuable info. Any one post up their web site for me?

    Thanks.

No one on this forum owns it, well never answers any questions anyway. The owner use to be a friend of mine by the name of Jason. He sold it to a solar company for big bucks and has moved onto bigger and better things like permanent vacation in his young years. The person today with Jason's user name is a admin and owns the forum and Solar Town.

All members helping have no vested interest, thus why you get honest answers here vs say Northern Arizona Wind and Sun and Midnite Solar forum where the angle is to sell you something. Not here, no one will recommend Solar Town. At least not me. Only the mods will recommend Solar Town.

And all that we are likely to do is to present it as an option to those who ask. But we will cut any other retail site advertising off at the ankles or below.
The sponsor information and a link to Solar Town can be found by a diligent search on the home page of the Forum, in the right hand column. Unlike some other forums where the sponsor link and logo are on every page.

I would not call user Jason an impostor as much as the user of an administrative account which would be tedious to rename or replace. No association with the original Jason should be inferred, not that most users have been here as long as Dereck to actually know the original Jason.

I really liked Jason and hope he is doing well. He was raised in TX.

Seems so many forums are being bought by "forum consolidators." I can see the draw when there are ads, and boy, do they usually add ads. But not here. Interesting. Probably harvesting our email addresses instead. Since I signed up here and a couple of other solar forums recently, my spam had increased at least twofold.

Go figure. Glad it is my Yahoo spam bucket account.

One thing that I have noticed with Google searches is that they tend to show forum sites that I visit regularly higher in the search ranking, I guess on the grounds that I am more interested in or more trusting of those sites.
And of course more than half of the adds on my Google pages (news, etc.) are for solar stuff by now.
Tracking is very efficient even if the sites you visit do not have your email address.
The simplest way to avoid that effect is to use a browser option or plugin that blocks tracking cookies. But that is getting pretty hard to do with the development of "ever cookies".

Yeah, for a while, the ads were not so bad, showing me stuff I was looking for, but I got sick of seeing honda generator ads... I installed Adblock on my mac. Problem solved...

It is a request, not a mandate. Most tracking software just ignores your request. Only way to stay hidden is through a PROXY SERVER with fake IP and location.

There is a difference between politely requesting that a website not track you and actively blocking the website from setting tracking cookies. The latter does not require the website's cooperation, but does require the browser plugin to be able to outwit the website's rich variety of tracking options.
If the website is tracking by your IP address (and you have a fixed IP address rather than one which changes from time to time, then an IP proxy is necessary to complete the job. But even with your IP address totally masked, you are still vulnerable to standard cookies and things like zero-pixel images with individualized URLs.
If the websites you want to visit are usable with all Java, javascript, and Flash disabled, you can still be tracked in other ways.

I know that everywhere I look today I run across ads for barefoot style running shoes - and I use a proxy showing I am located in New York, NY.

The searches are being sold to someone.

It's truly sad that you can't even get online, in hopes of doing a bit of anonymous browsing, or communicating with others, without someone else collecting demographics on you (Facebook comes to mind here) to sell to others, so they can tailor their ads specifically to everything you have been searching for online.

It reminds me of (supposed?) ads placed within movies that caused you to think of specific things you wanted, like cokes, etc., to purchase at the theatres. Any of you remember that? I recall it being news, or at least talked about by others, when I was a boy.

Yep. I remember those "burst" commercials the advertisers used to get people to purchase their food. Subliminal suggestion I believe it was called although the commercials really weren't subliminal and also didn't really work the way people said they should.
