    10 kW hybrid system?

    Hello,

    I recently bought a property off the grid. I'm looking to set up a microgrid with 10kW Solar, 10kW Wind, and a 10kW backup generator (Diesel). I'd like to have a battery bank to be able to store excess energy, and to provide energy (about 10kW preferrably but I'll settle for a less) for at least 48 hours without being fed.

    Is this possible? What kind of costs am I looking at? Are there kits to do this? I can't seem to find much through google, other than alibaba and foreign websites.

    1. Don't count on 10kW from wind unless you know very confidently (from measurement, not from asking old timers) the average wind in your area over the course of at least a year and are prepared to put up 60' to 90' towers hundreds of feet from any obstacles at all, even near ground level. Very few off-gridders can get good power from wind, but for those who can and who invest in good quality equipment it can be a real cost saver for times when solar is very poor (like winter...). Read all you can about it here and on wind power forums before even thinking of investing in it.
    2. The generator is an absolute necessity. But if there will be times that your need for it will be less than 5kW or so, look seriously into also getting a more efficient smaller generator.
    3. 10kW is an insanely large amount of power for off grid, and usually means that you are planning to use electric for heating, cooking, etc. which is a really bad idea.
    Give us some idea of what your planned loads are, and make realistic estimates by using a tool like a Kill-A-Watt (TM) meter.
    4. 10kW continuously for 48 hours is just about out of the question from batteries (other than ones used only by utility companies). Sunking will be happy to tell you how many hundreds of thousands of dollars you will spend on batteries every 5 years. This would be a 10,000 amp hour 48 volt battery bank if you were willing to destroy it by draining it completely. Two to five times that size if you want it to last.

      Where are you located?

      With wind not only is location important (average mph wind speed for the area) but the actual wind at your site.

      For example I live on a hillside above the Gulf of Izmir. Down on the water there is decent wind and on the hill top there is more wind. At my house it would be a total loss. There are several commercial wind farms in the immediate area - hill tops of course.

      Elevation - turbines have to be op top of a tower - height is very important.

        Forget the wind turbines as it is a complete waste of money and time. What you want to do is possible but extremely extremely expensive. You are looking at a minimum of 2 solar panel systems and quite possible 3 systems as there is only one charge controller of handling up to 5000 watt input. All others are limited to 4000 watts. Batteries alone are going to cost at minimum $22,000 USD and need replaced every 5 years. If you are grid connected is a complete waste of money.
