Is it dangerous to reassemble streetcar batteries?

My friend is going to divide the battery cells he removes from his car in half and stack them to make batteries. He thinks lead-acid batteries have too short a lifespan and take up too much space. Is this dangerous?

With proper ventilation, it is fairly safe.

I have never done it myself. Though years ago I had a buddy who re-manufactured automobile batteries as a self-employed business. He showed me the entire process. I was amazed at how simple it was. But, you will destroy your clothing. Wear shorts with a rubber apron over it.
