  • Batteries bubbling while idle.

I have some worn out FLA batteries which bubble even when they are idle/not charging. Why do they do this?

Sounds like a chemical reaction between the acid and something else in the battery. Probably not a good thing.

My cells will continue to have bubbles detach for several hours after charging stops. But by the next morning before dawn, they are always quiet.

Interesting. I tried searching google for "batteries bubbling while not charging", but I can only find information about batteries bubbling while charging.

They probably have antimony alloyed grids and while charging the antimony plates to the bulk material of the negative plates. The lead antimony couple causes current to flow and gas to be evolved. That is why antimony alloyed lead batteries self discharge faster than pure lead batteries or calcium alloyed lead batteries.
