    A system with the same amount of lead/acid, will be more reliable when wired in series, and for the higher voltage. So a single string of batteries wired in series for 48v has:
    Less copper (ohmic) loss because of lower currents in the system
    Longer battery life (all cells get the same charge, no unequal charge from parallel strings)
