      i know do it in series, but many people have made an investment in 12V batteries and there not going to throw them out until they crap out, so what is the best way to make the best of a less than ideal battery setup that is parallel connected?

        The best way to intentionally do it wrong would be #4 IMHO.

          Both methods work. I don't think the slight improvement in balance between the two is significant. You will likely see greater variations based on manufacturing tolerances between cells (and between cables) than you will be able to detect by using one method over the other.
