Just curious if you have ever considered using rain water. Do you get enough rain and is PH neutral? You might be far enough away from cities to at least experiment and see if there is any contaminants. Particulates is not a problem and easily filtered out with just resting. It is the dissolved sulfur and pollutants you would have to test for.
    Sadly, 2 problems,
    1) the auto fill systems are all acid compatible, their parts often don't hold up to the Alkaline Cells.
    2) Cell Sealing - NiFe cells are easily poisoned with atmospheric Co2 and they have a check valve in the vent cap, to prevent atmosphere getting into the electrolyte.

I usually run about 5 or 6 gallons every 2 weeks in summer, when the batteries are charging well. Winter, I seldom hit full charge, and gas off less water. I'm on a cycle where I do about a third of the cells every 2 weeks, so I'm only doing 10 or 15 fills at a time. 40 cells / 20 gallons is too much . The refill-fill lines are half-gallon.
