Question regarding a shunt

If you have a main ground wire that grounds all your 12V DC appliances to your chassis ground and you install a shunt with a battery monitor, you need to reroute this common ground wire so that it passes through the shunt before connecting to the chassis, correct?

It's my understanding that it's necessary to pass the negative side of all components "through" the shunt in order for the battery monitor to get a clear picture of what's really going on.

If you want to measure current in/out of the battery, then the shunt has to be the only thing between the battery and the rest of the system. All busbars, chassis grounds etc happen _after_ the shunt.
