  • Is it worth trying to fix this panel?

    Hi there,

I have an old 80W solar panel that recently broke. At first I thought it was the little connection box on it, but realized it only puts out voltage when bent in to be concave at the middle. Could it be as simple as a break in the "tab wires" seen on the front? Could it be something in the back or in one of the solar wafers themselves? Here are some pictures:

    Thanks for your suggestions!

Panels are sealed, once that is broken moisture gets in and soon kills the semiconductors. Wires
might be repairable, but contacts to the actual cell are very delicate and any disruption will
likely be unrepairable. good luck, Bruce Roe

Are the "contacts to the actual cell" on the back-side of the cell?

SCELL.jpg Front, and back. negative on front and positive on back. Take a close look how the two heavier lines on the front of the cells end on the surface, at one end and travel under the next cell on the other end.

Those solder contacts are just a very thin deposit of metal, that you might be able to
solder to ONCE, if you are GOOD, not at all for beginners. Bruce Roe
