I suspect that part of the issue is the advice on disconnecting a battery in a car. You disconnect the negative battery cable first because the wrench could easily touch a grounded part of the car frame. Putting the wrench on the negative is safer than doing the same on the positive post. And when you then move over to disconnect the positive cable there is no danger of a short because the negative is already disconnected.
That does not carry over in any way (except for the switch sticking out) to the situation of a mounted switch in the negative wire.
And when the switch is open it leaves wires that you might assume were a zero volts at high voltage instead. To me the downside overweighs the upside.
